Driving “Athlete Entrepreneurship” for a Second Career Curve: ASPN Sports Tech Accelerator Batch 3 Now Accepting Global Applications

Following the recent WBSC Premier12, where Team Taiwan clinched the championship, the fighting spirit of the athletes on the field—complemented by data analysis and smart training technology—proved to be the key to victory. To continue nurturing the innovative momentum that enhances athletic performance and boosts sports participation, the ASPN Sports Tech Accelerator, supported by the Ministry of Sports and executed by the Center of Industry Accelerator and Patent Strategy (IAPS) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, has officially launched its Batch 3 recruitment. Notably, this cycle introduces “Athlete Entrepreneurship” as a key focus, helping athletes transform their competitive experience into entrepreneurial advantages.

This batch of the ASPN Accelerator also echoes recent initiatives by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), actively encouraging “Female Leadership” and “Professional Athlete Cross-disciplinary Entrepreneurship.” The goal is to foster more sports tech startups rooted in practical experience with high market potential, driving diversity and sustainability within the sports industry.

From Athletes to Founders: ASPN Helps Athletes Win Their Career’s Second Half

Professor Edward Huang, Program Director of ASPN and Chief Industry Liaison Officer at NYCU, stated that athletes possess the most intuitive insights into the pain points of training, competition, and live events. However, during the transition to entrepreneurship, they often lack business resources, industry connections, and entry points into international markets. Through structured mentoring, international matchmaking, and real-world field validation, the ASPN Accelerator helps athletes convert professional expertise into market-competitive solutions.

Since its inception, ASPN has successfully nurtured over 130 sports tech startup teams from 25 countries. Notable cases include StatsInsight, which provides data analysis to support the performance of Taiwan’s national teams in international competitions, demonstrating the immense potential of combining sports expertise with technological innovation.

Focusing on Three Key Themes to Create Essential Sports Tech Solutions

In addition to providing “zero-fee, zero-equity” acceleration resources, ASPN Batch 3 focuses on three major recruitment directions. Teams meeting these criteria will receive priority consideration:

  • Women in Sports: Encouraging female founders or female athletes to invest in sports tech R&D and entrepreneurship, showcasing “Women’s Power” in sports.
  • Athlete Entrepreneurship: Creating a dedicated entrepreneurial bridge for current or retired athletes to help them seamlessly transition into the business and technology sectors.
  • Event and Venue Applications: In response to major upcoming international events like the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games and the 2027 Kansai World Masters Games, seeking innovative solutions that enhance spectator experiences and venue operational efficiency.

Connecting Global Resources to Fast-Track Startups into International Markets

Selected teams will receive one-on-one coaching from international mentors across 13 countries and gain opportunities to connect directly with global industry partners such as Decathlon, NVIDIA, Chunghwa Telecom, Plug and Play (USA), Mizuno (Japan), and ASTN (Australia). ASPN also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SPORTEC, Japan’s largest sports tech exhibition. Through cross-border resource matchmaking and field collaboration, ASPN helps Taiwanese startups reduce the costs of overseas landing and propels “Taiwan R&D” onto the global stage.
